There was a time when Castelló d'Empúries was far more than a small medieval town. As the capital of one of the most powerful counties in medieval Catalonia, it was home to counts, merchants, judges and craftsmen, all contributing to a city that aspired to become an episcopal seat and rival the great urban centres of its time. On this guided walking tour, we will explore the historic heart of the former county capital, discovering the magnificent Basilica of Santa Maria, known as the Cathedral of the Empordà; the Curia and medieval prison, where justice was administered; the remains of the former Jewish Quarter; noble mansions adorned with coats of arms and Gothic windows; the Portal de la Gallarda, the city's ancient fortified gateway; and the Old Bridge, crossed for centuries by merchants, pilgrims and travellers.
